In a gesture of international solidarity, the government of the People’s Republic of China has donated vital food aid to Lesotho, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the nation in times of need. The handover ceremony, held at the Food Management Unit (FMU) store in Maseru, was attended by Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Lejone Mpotjoa, and Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho, Yang Xiaokun.

The donation, valued at approximately M25 million, includes 410 tons of white rice, 160 tons of parboiled rice, and 240 tons of wheat—a total of over 800 tons of essential food supplies. These provisions will be distributed across Lesotho’s 10 districts, offering relief to vulnerable communities facing food insecurity.

Ambassador Yang Xiaokun reaffirmed China’s dedication to strengthening ties with Lesotho through humanitarian aid. “This donation is a testament to China’s enduring commitment to its promises and the strength of China Aid,” he stated during the ceremony. The assistance reflects China’s continued role as a key development partner, addressing global food security challenges while supporting Lesotho’s most vulnerable populations.

Minister Lejone Mpotjoa expressed profound gratitude for the timely support, emphasizing the impact it will have on food-insecure communities. “This assistance will significantly help address our people’s immediate needs,” he noted. He further highlighted the importance of international partnerships in tackling global crises and ensuring food stability.

During the ceremony, officials from both nations inspected the food consignment before formally signing handover certificates, marking the official transfer of aid.

This latest donation underscores the strong diplomatic relations between Lesotho and China, showcasing the power of international cooperation in addressing urgent humanitarian challenges. As Lesotho continues to navigate economic and climatic challenges, such partnerships play a crucial role in safeguarding food security and supporting sustainable development efforts.
