In a celebration of academic excellence and agricultural innovation, the Maseru Association of Agriculture Teachers (MAAT) hosted a prestigious awards ceremony in Masianokeng, Maseru, recognising exceptional 2024 LGCSE agriculture students and dedicated educators.
The event brought together agriculture teachers from across Maseru, two former MAAT chairpersons, and the Chairperson of the Lesotho Association of Agriculture Teachers (LAAT), Mathafeng Moteoli.
Ten outstanding students from various schools were honoured for their commitment and excellence in agricultural studies, highlighting the sector’s importance in shaping the nation’s future.
Since its establishment in 2010, MAAT has been committed to driving innovation and excellence in agricultural education.
Speaking at the ceremony, MAAT Chairperson, Mr. Molapo Shakhane, reflected on the organisation’s journey and its unwavering dedication to progress.

“Investing in agriculture not only enhances food security but also creates both on-farm and off-farm employment opportunities, helping to reduce rural poverty
The MAAT Awards were made possible through collaboration between MAAT, Farmers Pitso, and Seahlolo Newspaper.
Delivering a keynote address, LAAT Chairperson, Mathafeng Moteoli, urged school principals to invest more in agricultural projects, stressing agriculture’s vital role in Lesotho’s economy, food security, and rural development.
“Agriculture plays a crucial role in my life, and I hope more people recognise its significance,” Moteoli stated.
He added, “Investing in agriculture not only enhances food security but also creates both on-farm and off-farm employment opportunities, helping to reduce rural poverty.”
The ceremony also provided a platform for students to express gratitude and Thabisile Hlongwane, a former student of Sefate Sa Bophelo English Medium, spoke on behalf of the honoured students.
“Our teachers never stopped pushing us to do our best. We are truly grateful for their hard work and for this incredible ceremony in our honour,” she said.
The event concluded with an awards presentation, where outstanding students received medals, certificates, and trophies.

Retiring educators, including former MAAT Chairperson, Mr. Lehlohonolo Ntsebe, were also honoured for their years of dedicated service to agricultural education.
This celebration, Shakhane noted not only recognised academic excellence but also reinforced the critical role of agriculture in education and national development.
“Through continued investment and recognition, MAAT remains steadfast in its mission to nurture the next generation of agricultural leaders in Lesotho,” he said.
