The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, through its Department of Livestock Services, has confirmed an outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) at Mahlase cattle post in Botha-Bothe.

Six cattle tested positive after seventeen animals were sampled from the affected herd.

The Department of Livestock Services has placed the affected cattle post and its neighbouring kraals under precautionary quarantine. The movement of cloven-hoofed animals within and around the affected area has been restricted to prevent further spread of the disease.

The Ministry urges livestock farmers, traders, and the general public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected cases. Symptoms to look out for include excessive salivation, lameness, mouth lesions, and hoof lesions in cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. Suspected cases should be reported immediately to the nearest veterinary office
